After nine strong seasons, San Diego Chargers’ running back, LaDainian Tomlinson signed with the New York Jets. Tomlinson or popularly known as “LT” set numerous NFL records including MVP for the year of 2006. However, as LT departed from the Chargers, the quest to fill his spot began.
The answer to San Diego’s prayers was not far in sight. Fresno State running back, Ryan Matthews demonstrated immense potential throughout his junior year. As a result, many teams including the Chargers became interested. During the draft, San Diego swept up Matthews in the first round (12th overall).
Matthews having grown up in Bakersfield, California was inspired by LaDainian Tomlinson. However, it is not going to be a walk in the park for the newly signed rookie. He realizes the pressure of having to fill the shoes of a tremendous athlete. Only time will tell if he is going to crack or live up to the hyped notion that he is LT’s heir.
